Münster (renewablepress) - The use of solar energy in Germany continues to grow. From January to August 2024, new solar systems with a capacity of around 10,200 MW were installed (same period in 2023: 10,100 MW). This is the result of a recent evaluation of data from the Market Master Data Register (MaStR) maintained by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) by the Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien (IWR). In total, around 4.5 million solar installations with an installed capacity of around 93,200 MW are in operation in Germany as of the end of August 2024 (BNetzA data status: 05.09.2024). The German government has therefore already exceeded the 2024 solar expansion target.

According to current market data, the solar boom in Germany continues unabated in the current year. “If the trend continues until the end of 2024, more than one million new solar systems with a capacity of more than 15,000 MW will be installed, as in the previous year,” said IWR head Dr. Norbert Allnoch in Münster. In terms of the total photovoltaic capacity installed in Germany, the 100,000 MW mark is still well within reach given the dynamic development of the year to date, according to the IWR forecast. However, this means that the German government's 2024 expansion target of 88,000 MW (88 GW) of solar capacity in accordance with the expansion path for renewable energies (Section 4 EEG 2023) has already been exceeded ahead of schedule.

Allnoch: “Even if solar construction in Germany currently appears high at around 15,000 MW per year, the pace of expansion in China currently eclipses everything on an international level. In the first seven months of 2024 alone, solar installations with a capacity of 123,500 MW were newly installed in China. A record annual expansion of around 250,000 MW of solar capacity is expected in China in 2024. In Germany, total solar capacity has so far reached around 93,200 MW, but it has also taken us 30 years to achieve this.”

For Germany, the current IWR forecast for 2024 remains unchanged, according to which the new wind and solar capacity connected to the grid in Germany could reach 15,000 to max. 20,000 MW (15 - 20 GW), partly due to the new offshore wind turbines. The additional annual electricity generation in a single year (2024) from domestic wind and solar expansion alone would reach around 20 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. For comparison: In order to produce this amount of electricity with nuclear power plants, at least two large nuclear power plants would have to be connected to the grid, with construction times of 10 - 15 years per nuclear power plant.

Note: The data evaluation of the Market Master Data Register (MaStR) at the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) reflects an interim status as of 05.09.2024 and therefore represents a snapshot. Statistical changes (including retroactive changes) are possible at any time due to numerous subsequent notifications of installations or corrections to the installation register by the BNetzA. The uncertainties do not lead to changes in the trend statements.

About Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien (IWR)

In 1996, the International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (IWR) was established as an independent and private service institution of the renewable energy industry. The IWR focuses on the fields of research, economic and policy consultation as well as media and international networks in the renewable or regenerative energies sector. One main objective of the IWR is to play an instrumental role in introducing and spreading awareness for an industrial, international business profile of the renewable energy industry.
Dr. Norbert Allnoch, Director of the International Economic Platform of Renewable Energies (IWR), 1995, on the definition: "According to our definition, the Renewable Energy Industry is one which takes an interdisciplinary approach to the issue of renewable energy supply (protecting both the climate and resources) and the construction of renewable plants and systems (industry policy for the three areas electricity, heat and fuel."Chronology of the Renewable Energy Industry - Important IWR contributions, including prizes and awards - 2007 Publication of the first structural analysis for a federal state according to the IWR-analysis method for renewable systems engineering and services(study "Zur Lage der regenerativen Energiewirtschaft in NRW" )2007 International network-contacts:IWR-director Dr. Allnoch speaks with King Harald V. of Norway and slaug Haga, norwegian minister of energy Presentation of the network / RENIXX in the USA, dialogue with McGinty, environment minister of Pennsylvania2006 IWR starts renewable stock index RENIXX (
