CPC Finland to provide Finnish wind power to Google

Helsinki (renewablepress) - CPC Finland Oy has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with the technology company Google. According to Google’s media release, the company wants to maintain matching 100% of its electricity consumption with renewable energy in the areas where it operates. Google states that it commits to staying at 100 % renewable energy by purchasing the electricity for its data centers from local renewable energy producers. Google has operated a data center in Hamina, Finland, since 2009. The CPC Finland wind farm that will provide power to Google will be constructed in the wind farm area of Lakiakangas in Isojoki, located in the Southern Ostrobothnia region of Finland. The construction of the wind farm has begun in July 2018 and the turbine is scheduled to be erected in the summer of 2019.

According to Erik Trast, Managing Director of CPC Finland, the company is very satisfied with the newly begun cooperation. ”The power purchase agreement signed with Google is a delightful sign of confidence, not only in CPC’s quality and workmanship, but also in the entire Finnish market of renewable energy. By committing to renewable energy and sustainability, a giant company such as Google is a remarkable and powerful trendsetter to other industries as well. ”

Google invests in the Finnish wind energy for the first time. According to its media release, the company announces signing power purchase agreements for the entire production of three new wind farms, with the total capacity of 190 megawatts. The agreements will bring Google up to 14 power purchase agreements in Europe, totalling nearly 900 megawatts of wind and solar energy capacity. The latest investments will bring Google’s renewable energy capacity to more than 3,4 gigawatts worldwide. In addition to committing to sustainability, Google states that the long-term power purchase agreements also aim to increase the cost-competitiveness of renewable energy.

CPC Finland’s Erik Trast considers Google’s decision to purchase wind energy in Finland a wise, forward-looking solution. ”The wind resources in Finland are excellent. Wind energy also meets the requirements of cost-competitiveness – in many areas of the country wind power is already the most cost-effective form of power generation available”, says Trast. According to Erik Trast, along with the cost competitiveness, one of the greater advantages of wind power is also its fast realization. ”By using wind energy, we can produce remarkable amounts of energy with a fast construction and installation schedule.”
