Deutsche Windtechnik in offshore operations for RWE Innogy

Bremen - The offshore branch of Deutsche Windtechnik got the contract from RWE Innogy to assemble 97 self retracting lifelines of the manufacturer Capital Safety which are particularly weather-resistant. For several weeks now the mechanics of the impartial service company assemble these appliances which are developed especially for offshore operations at the 48 jack-up foundations as well as at the substations of the offshore wind park \"Nordsee Ost\". On the one hand assembly is done in the international port of Bremerhaven, on the other hand offshore at the foundations which are already set. \"About half of all devices are already delivered. Work is progressing rapidly!\", Jens Landwehr, head of technical operations at Deutsche Windtechnik Rotor und Turm, describes the interim result.

Special safety requirements during boat landing
The self retracting lifeline \"Sealed Blok\" of Capital Safety is a special type of personal protective equipment (PPE) which offers the employees the highest protection against falls and the risk of drowning during the “boat landing” – the crossing from vessel over the ladder to the platform of the wind energy plant. The corrosion-resistant system made of stainless steel meets all requirements for reliable operations on the sea: \"As the unwinding and braking mechanical systems are encapsulated separately, neither moisture nor dirt can penetrate and impair the function. This increases safety and reduces maintenance\", Stefan Haase, Country Manager of Germany, Austria and Switzerland at Capital Safety, describes the suitability of the self retracting lifelines for offshore operations. This means that due to the encapsulation only one basic visual and functional inspection is required each year and only after five years an overhaul is necessary. Normally self retracting lifelines must be dismounted and maintained completely once a year.

All components certified
In order to achieve an optimum position of the self retracting lifeline at the jack-up, in the first step Deutsche Windtechnik mounts \"davits\", which are designed for this special purpose, at the upper end of the jack-up ladders. Then the self retracting lifeline is fastened directly at the davit so that the stainless steel cable which can be extended up to 15 meters is always perpendicular to the user. \"The davit is specially designed for RWE Innogy which we developed together with Capital Safety. Our experiences in the field of plant safety and our knowledge of norms made decisive contributions to the success of the certification\", Jens Landwehr describes the procedure. Also the other components of the system \"Sealed Blok\" are certified according to the valid norms.

Offshore wind park \"Nordsee Ost\"
About 35 km north of the island Helgoland RWE Innogy (www.rwe.com) builds the offshore wind park \"Nordsee Ost\". In water depths of up to 25 meters 48 wind turbines of the manufacturer REpower® are to be established. After commissioning the power plant on the high sea is supposed to achieve a total performance of 295 MW.
