G8 and climate protection: Merkel lassos Bush

Münster - Heads of state and government have taken another step with regard to climate protection at the G8 summit in Heiligendamm (Germany). The USA, who have not ratified the Kyoto Protocol, are now ready to negotiate under the umbrella of the UN. “Angela Merkel’s important success has been to reintegrate and pull the USA onboard in the international climate protection process”, said Dr. Norbert Allnoch, Director of the International Economic Platform of Renewable Energies (IWR), Münster (Germany).

No one realistically expected far-reaching binding climate protection goals to be reached at the state level during the G8 summit. Allnoch: “Through the G8 declaration on reducing greenhouse gases, climate protection has been set in motion and has become more concrete – even if there is an open loophole. Therefore the key factor will be how constructively the USA and more importantly, the emerging countries such as China and India participate in the post-Kyoto accord at the UN level.” Everyone is aware of their respective responsibility, even President Bush, says Allnoch.
