IWR: Number of Battery Storage Systems Exceeds 2 Million – Strong Market Growth in Germany Expected
The number of battery storage systems rises to over 2 million - Germany is facing a strong market growth
© zhu difeng / Adobe StockMünster (renewablepress) - More than 2 million battery storage systems have already been installed in Germany, but the real boom in the storage market is yet to come. This emerges from an analysis of data from the Market Master Data Register (MaStR) of the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) conducted by the "Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien" (IWR). From January to July 2025, more than 318,000 new battery storage systems with a total installed power of around 2,088 MW and an energy capacity of 3,868 MWh were commissioned.
“The number of installed storage systems has surpassed an important milestone with over 2 million units. The large number of current planning projects involving utility-scale systems indicates that the real market ramp-up is imminent,” said Dr. Norbert Allnoch, head of IWR. “Significantly reduced prices for battery storage systems as well as a sharply increased demand from industry and commerce are the main drivers of this growth trend.”
In the federal state comparison for the period January to July 2025 (data as of August 26, 2025), North Rhine-Westphalia leads in the statistics on the number of battery systems, followed by Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
Allnoch sees North Rhine-Westphalia as the main beneficiary of the upcoming market upswing, with strong prospects as a future storage hub for Germany: “With its many former power plant sites, strong industrial base, and existing infrastructure, the state has the best conditions for developing from a power generation location into a storage hub for the entire country,” he said.
For the full year 2025, the IWR expects - if the current annual trend continues - around 550,000 new battery storage systems nationwide with an installed power of nearly 3,600 MW and an energy capacity of 6,700 MWh. By the end of 2025, Germany could thus have approximately 2.3 million battery storage systems in operation with a total installed power of around 16,000 MW (16 GW) and an energy capacity of over 25,000 MWh (25 GWh).
Note: The data analysis from the Market Master Data Register at the BNetzA reflects the status as of 26.08.2025 and represents a snapshot. Statistical changes, for example, due to late reporting or corrections, are always possible. Trend statements remain unaffected.

About Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien (IWR)
In 1996, the International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (IWR) was established as an independent and private service institution of the renewable energy industry. The IWR focuses on the fields of research, economic and policy consultation as well as media and international networks in the renewable or regenerative energies sector. One main objective of the IWR is to play an instrumental role in introducing and spreading awareness for an industrial, international business profile of the renewable energy industry.
Dr. Norbert Allnoch, Director of the International Economic Platform of Renewable Energies (IWR), 1995, on the definition: "According to our definition, the Renewable Energy Industry is one which takes an interdisciplinary approach to the issue of renewable energy supply (protecting both the climate and resources) and the construction of renewable plants and systems (industry policy for the three areas electricity, heat and fuel."Chronology of the Renewable Energy Industry - Important IWR contributions, including prizes and awards - 2007 Publication of the first structural analysis for a federal state according to the IWR-analysis method for renewable systems engineering and services(study "Zur Lage der regenerativen Energiewirtschaft in NRW" )2007 International network-contacts:IWR-director Dr. Allnoch speaks with King Harald V. of Norway and slaug Haga, norwegian minister of energy Presentation of the network / RENIXX in the USA, dialogue with McGinty, environment minister of Pennsylvania2006 IWR starts renewable stock index RENIXX (
