Offshore Wind Energy in Great Britain gains significant momentum

- German and Danish companies among the winners of the latest bidding round

Düsseldorf/Rostock - On 8 January 2010 the Crown Estate, the British Royal real-estate management body, announced the winners of the third bidding round for offshore wind energy projects in the UK. This round of offshore wind energy generation aims to deliver a quarter of the UK’s total electricity needs by 2020. All parties have now signed exclusive contracts for their development zones with the Crown Estate.

German companies are among the project developers with exclusive zone contracts. Consortia with German participation will build just under half of the total 32 GW offshore capacity planned for 2020. However, the European electricity infrastructure is still inadequate, and there is urgent need for action in this area.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: \"Our policies in support of offshore wind energy have already put us ahead of every other country in the world. The offshore wind industry is at the heart of the UK economy’s shift to low carbon, and could be worth £75 billion and support up to 70,000 jobs by 2020.\"

Construction on nine gigantic wind parks off the UK coast is slated to begin in 2013, with a total 32 GW installed capacity by 2020. As announced by GTAI on 12 January 2010, German and Danish technology companies stand to be among the winners. According to a report in the Times newspaper, the wind park developers will probably source from these countries the bulk of the approximately 6400 wind turbines that are needed.

Developments in the British offshore industry are at the focus of an event by Düsseldorf consulting firm \"windConsultant\" on 9 March 2010 in Rostock (http://www.windConsultant.de). Speakers will include David Still of Clipper Windpower UK, Mirelle Ball of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change, Clare McDermott of British offshore region One North East, Paul Gibson of MPI Offshore UK and Richard Krasenberg of Mott MacDonald UK. German offshore companies hoping to get involved in Great Britain will also make presentations.

Partners of the event include the Wind Energy Network Rostock e.V. and EnergieRegion.NRW. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has long been home to a particularly high concentration of suppliers to the international wind industry.
