German Offshore Wind Industry is Ready to Take Advantage of Export Opportunities to the USA

- Successful Start of the 1st European-North American Offshore Summit in Rostock, Germany

Rostock/Düsseldorf - The first \"Offshore Summit: European-North American Dialog\" held on the 10th and 11th of September 2009 in Rostock, Germany uniquely promoted dialog between companies and specialists from Europe and the USA. The summit boasted 120 attendees, coming from Germany, the United States, Spain, Denmark and the United Kingdom. Five of the United States contributed to the summit’s success.

The American wind energy industry is developing in a positive manner: Even though in this year, only ca. 7,000 MW wind capacity will be fed into the grid, in 2008 the count was 8500 MW, which makes the its course rather distinct. The new American administration’s stimulus package is promoting the wind energy industry and many states are looking to recruit German companies to push the expansion of the wind farms, both onshore as well as offshore. In 2008, fifty-five US-manufacturing sites were opened or expanded to fulfil the demand on turbines; this alone creating 35,000 new \"green\" jobs.

On the 23rd of June 2009, the US-administration approved five offshore wind project sites located on the coasts of New Jersey and Delaware. United States Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Lee \"Ken\" Salazar has made the development of offshore wind energy one of the top priorities of the Obama administration. Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia, with their high offshore wind potential, positively look towards the future of offshore wind energy. \"We want offshore but require the technological support of our friends in the European wind energy industry.\", says Ross Tyler, who spoke for Maryland at the summit. Mark Rodgers, spokesman of Cape Wind, noted, \"The Cape Wind Project in Massachusetts is planning the erection of 150 turbines that will produce 420 MW\". New Jersey’s largest source of energy is offshore wind power; in the master plan, around 3000 MW of offshore wind power will be going to the grid by 2020. Maine also has excellent wind resources at their disposal and boasting extraordinarily speedy approval procedures, they promote testing of turbines in deep waters.

However, Laurie Jodziewicz, Representative of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) noted; besides the necessity of regulation, the desire of better conditions for grants for offshore projects also exists in the USA.

\"Manufacturers, such as Siemens and REpower, as well as suppliers, service providers and specialists coined the summit’s profile. Direct business contacts were the focus of many discussions\", so says Annette Nuesslein, GADORE Center USA. \"The wind energy industry in Europe is well positioned, it has comprehensive competency and technological solutions at their disposal and in turn, this provides excellent entrepreneurial opportunities in the USA.\"

The host and initiator of the event was Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The event’s organizer was the GADORE Center USA (German-American Dialog on Renewable Energy).
Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the GADORE Center USA assists small and medium-sized wind energy companies, amongst others, during their entry into the US-market.
