7th International Workshop on Large-Scale Integration of Wind Power into Power Systems as well as on Transmission Networks for Offshore Wind Farms in Madrid

Langen/Madrid - Considering the predicted "power gap" for Germany by 2020 and Europe’s increasing dependence from suppliers of fossil energy sources it is an urgent question how large-scale integration of wind power into existing grids can be managed. Therefore, it is a great challenge to reconcile scientific research results with economic needs. A workshop which focuses exactly on the large-scale integration of wind power will be held in Madrid this spring. In recent years, Spain has become one of the European countries that have experienced the largest increase in installed wind energy capacity and is – by now – a major wind power producer. Wind power penetration levels also have reached impressively high levels, with as much as 40% of total demand being provided by wind power.

From May 26th to 27th, 2008, Madrid, Spain, will host the International Workshop on Large-Scale Integration of Wind Power into Power Systems as well as on Transmission Networks for Offshore Wind Farms organised by the German energy consulting company Energynautics in cooperation with the Spanish Wind Energy Association AEE and the Universidad Pontificia Comillas Madrid.

Also the seventh edition of this workshop focuses primarily on the technical aspects of the large-scale integration of wind power into existing power systems and transmission networks for offshore wind farms.

Today this event has developed into the premier workshop in its field in Europe, a regular forum for exchanging knowledge and ideas and sharing experiences. Previous venues were Stockholm (Sweden), Billund (Denmark), Glasgow (Scotland) and Delft (the Netherlands), host of the 6th workshop in October 2006 with more than 200 participants from 21 countries and 5 continents.

The workshop offers participants from leading international research facilities as well as the wind energy and power transmission industries a platform for discussing technical and economic aspects of the large-scale integration of wind power and for presenting results from ongoing research. The more than 70 presentations from speakers from at least 18 countries focus on current experience regarding the system integration of wind power, on recent advances in grid connection technologies, power management systems for offshore wind farms, production forecast and control systems for wind power as well as on regulations and standards for the grid connection. The workshop wants to stimulate interdisciplinary thinking among wind energy industry, transmission/distribution network operators and research facilities and discuss topics for further research.

On May 28th, the conference organisers will offer a field trip to the control centres of the Spanish Transmission System Operator REE (CECOEL/CECRE) in Madrid and Iberdrola (CORE) in Toledo as well a visit to the Villacañas windfarm.
