Wind Boom USA

- American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) identifies the Supplier Market in the USA as Impairment

Hamburg - In the past year, the American wind industry installed 5233 megawatts (MW) and thus, in less than one year, has increased the nationally installed performance by 45%. As the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) recently announced, this increase is based on an investment of over 9 billion US-Dollars. The AWEA Executive Director, Mr. Randall Swisher adds, "This is the third successive year of record growth and contributes to the establishment of wind energy as one of the greatest resources of new power supply within the country."

Nevertheless, instable wind industry promotion has caused headaches during the past years. Production Tax Credit (PTC) and corresponding tax rebates are facing expiration at the end of the year. Both the President and Congress are clearly called upon to prolong the current and sole national promotional instrument and hence, ensure stability.

The US-wind industry is currently able to exhibit 16,818 MW. It is striking that Texas leads with installed 4356 MW, followed by California, Minnesota, Iowa and Washington.

But besides AWEA’s political lobby work, the American Wind Association also focuses on another field of activity: whereas large demand on facilities does exist, delivery times are excessively long. Neither manufacturers nor suppliers are able to keep pace with the demand arising in Europe and North America.

AWEA’s current internal analysis "Value Chain Marketing Priorities Assessment 2007" identifies existing bottlenecks and enunciates strategies. Especially gears, generators and large warehouses are lacking, whereas, besides the global competition for the most significant raw material, the sluggish development of production capacities is being held responsible. This is being counteracted; positive signals are identifiable in which significant manufacturers are offering suppliers both financial incentives as well as long-term contracts. However, the availability of cranes, transport capacities as well as the operation and maintenance of facilities remain critical.

Wind Boom USA – Opportunities for European Companies in the Wind Industry – named as such for the aforementioned purpose, takes place in Cologne on the 14th and 15th of April. Target groups include European medium-sized companies and corporations willing to exploit their market opportunities within the USA. The cooperating partners and hosts of the event are the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Trade and Energy of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the EnergieAgentur NRW as well as the HUSUM WindEnergy.
