EnerSys begins construction work on 14 wind turbine generators in Croatia

Bietigheim-Bissingen, 11/29/2005. International wind farm planners, EnerSys GmbH (Bietigheim-Bissingen), have given the go-ahead for construction work to start at the Trtar-Krtolin wind farm in Croatia. EnerSys will erect 14 Enercon E48 wind turbine generators (WTG) on a coastal ridge near the Dalmatian city of Sibenik. When it is finished in the 2nd quarter of 2006, the wind farm will be run by WPD AG, Bremen, and EnerSys GmbH.

The project was developed by EnerSys’ Croatian subsidiary, EnerSys d.o.o. EnerSys’ Managing Director, Dr. Hartmut Brösamle, expressed his satisfaction at the conclusion of the planning phase after four years of preparation. “Of course, our experience in project development in Germany helped us a lot. Nevertheless, the Croatian approval procedure was unexplored territory for us. However, close and constructive cooperation with the respective local and national authorities allowed the project planning phase to be completed without a hitch”.

The location, 70 km north of Split, has excellent wind conditions. Despite a comparatively low hub height of 50 m at an installed output of 11.2 Megawatts, a total production of more than 30 million kilowatt hours is being forecast. The electricity will be fed into the distribution grid of the state energy supplier, HEP, with whom EnerSys has a contract to supply electricity.

“Now that the planning phase has been successfully completed and the construction works have started, which was shown on Croatian television, we can look forward to the future”, commented Andreas Chollet, the EnerSys Project Manager in Croatia. “We would like to establish ourselves in Croatia and continue to realize more wind farm projects.” Andreas Chollet went on to say, “If things go to plan, a similar-sized project located only a few kilometres from the current site will be ready for construction in 2006”.

The construction of the Trtar-Krtolin wind farm will intensify cooperation between WPD AG and EnerSys GmbH. Having now cooperated on the construction of three wind parks in Germany and the founding of a joint company, WE² GmbH (focussing on project development in Eastern Europe), the wind farm in Croatia will be built according to a proven division of labour system: While WPD has proven expertise in international project financing and realization, EnerSys has established itself as a successful project developer in Germany and the rest of Europe.

Wind energy in Croatia
The EnerSys wind farm in Trtar-Krtolin is only the second in Croatia with the seven WTGs on the island of Pag being the other. The expansion of wind energy utilisation is welcomed and promoted by the Croatian government. The government in Zagreb wants to significantly reduce its dependence on energy imports and to achieve the expansion goals for renewable energies in terms of EU accession negotiations. An electricity supply regulation similar to the German Renewable Energy Sources Act is currently being drafted.

A brief synopsis of EnerSys
EnerSys plans, constructs and operates wind turbine generators in Europe. Since it was founded in 1994, EnerSys has built 252 WTGs with an installed output of 243 Megawatts. EnerSys is based near Stuttgart in Germany and has subsidiaries in Neuseddin, Osnabrück and Kassel. Its international activities are coordinated through its subsidiaries in Paris, Valencia and Dubrovnik.

A brief synopsis of WPD
WPD AG, the market leader in Germany, has been implementing renewable energy projects since 1996; by mid-2005, 80 wind farms with a total output of 800 megawatts have been completed. This entailed successfully placing investments of over 1 billion euros. Services include comprehensive business plans, financial project controlling and the structuring of project financing. In the overseas market sector, WPD has established offices in Stockholm and London and subsidiaries in Spain, France, Italy, Sweden and Australia – a series of projects are in the specific development phase here. In a rating by Euler Hermes GmbH, WPD AG’s credit rating (capital stock of 10 million euros) was rewarded with the excellent result of an “A”.
