4. International Conference on Energy Efficiency in Motor Driven Systems
Motor driven systems account for about 65 % of the industrial electricity demand in Europe. If energy efficiency would be given more importance in new plants of during refurbishments, Europe could save up to 202 billion kWh in electricity consumption. This would significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions at zero or even negative costs, as improvement measures in motor driven systems are generally economic.
To discuss the newest developments in this field, the fourth international conference on Energy Efficiency in Motor Driven Systems (EEMODS) will be held in Heidelberg, Germany, from 5 to 8 September 2005. This event, which is taking place in Germany for the first time after being staged in Lisbon (1996), London (1999) and Trevisio (2002), is being jointly organized by the European Union and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research in Karlsruhe.
Approx. 200 participants from industry, policy making and research will come together in Heidelberg to exchange views on the latest technological trends in motor driven systems, their market potential and environmental impacts. They will discuss the current developments in legal regulations, for example directives on the eco-design of products and energy services in the EU but also in other countries such as China, India or the USA, as well as voluntary commitments of industry or programmes such as the Motor Challenge Programme.
The conference will focus on motor driven systems in industry, for example in pumps, fans, cooling units, compressed air applications or electric vehicles. According to numerous studies, the high world-wide electricity consumption of motor driven systems could be reduced by about 20 per cent at payback periods of less than two years.
