Energy: Heating energy and fuel are the secret price drivers

- Electricity prices register smallest increase in the past 15 years

Muenster - When it comes to the energy transition (Energiewende) in Germany, the increase in electricity prices has been dominating the headlines for some time now. In comparison to heating costs and fuel prices, however, the electricity prices have risen the least in the past 15 years, reported IWR, a renewable energy institute, in Muenster.

Heating oil is at the top of the list when it comes to energy price increases. According to statistics from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, heating oil prices have surged 300 per cent from 1998 to 2012. In addition, the figures show that the price for natural gas has gone up 100 per cent during the same time period. With respect to fuel prices, according to the largest German automobile club, ADAC, drivers of diesel-powered vehicles paid more than 150 per cent more at the pump than in 1998, those filling up with premium-grade petrol faced an increase of close to 100 per cent. Electricity costs are in comparison situated at the very bottom of the list of price increases. The cost of power has only gone up around 66 per cent since 1998, even when factoring in the much-discussed EEG levy (surcharge imposed by the German Renewables Act to cover feed-in-tariff payments for renewable capacity installations).

“Political leaders have become fixated with the power sector, even though electricity has exhibited the smallest price increase in the past 15 years, even when taking into consideration the rise in the EEG levy. The rising costs for heating and for the fuel required for the daily commute to work are a much greater concern for many consumers, said IWR Director Dr. Norbert Allnoch. Allnoch: “It is quite astounding that in the wake of the price increases and our strong dependency on oil and gas, political leaders are not giving more attention to the heat and fuel sectors than that paid to electricity.”
