Bremen and the coast of Lower Saxony: innovative windpower region - Bremen hosts 8th international Windintegration Workshop in October 2009

Langen/Bremen - Bremen lies in the heart of Germany’s \"wind county\" - around 18% of the annual electricity consumption in Bremen and the surrounding state of Lower Saxony is supplied by wind power. The first German offshore wind parks are currently under construction about 40 kilometers off the North Sea Island of Borkum; and the grid connection of one of the wind parks constitutes a true novelty: For the first time it applies HVDC technology based on voltage source converters to connect a 400 MW offshore wind farm to shore (Bard Offshore 1 project). Furthermore, the region is known for innovations in wind turbine technology: Four wind turbine manufacturers have installed prototypes of 5 MW (or larger) wind turbines within a radius of 130 km of Bremen.

This is an ideal environment for discussing important questions related to the network integration of wind power, such as recent developments in grid connection technology, power management systems for offshore wind farms, production forecast and control systems for wind power as well grid-connection standards and regulations. These topics attract large interest world-wide.

This year Bremen will host the 8th International Workshop on Large-Scale Integration of Wind Power into Power Systems as well as on Transmission Networks for Offshore Wind Farms, organised by the German energy consulting company Energynautics. Between October 14th and 15th, 2009 almost 300 experts in wind energy technology, power transmission technology, power systems and market operation from more than 20 countries will meet in Bremen. The emphasis of this year’s workshop is again on both theoretical discussions and practical applications.

The workshop wants to stimulate interdisciplinary approaches and discussions among wind energy industry, transmission/distribution network operators and research facilities. It also wants to discuss topics for further research in this area.

On October 16th, 2009, there will be a field trip in addition to the workshop programme. Participants will be able to visit the above mentioned HVDC light converter station of the Bard Offshore 1 project and a German wind turbine manufacturer.
