Field balancing of rotor blades after blade repair

Ismaning - After successfully testing its balancing measuring equipment on a wind turbine, the PRÜFTECHNIK Service & Diagnosis Center is now expanding its service spectrum to include the field balancing of rotor blades.

The field test took place on a wind turbine damaged by lightening. One rotor blade suffered a 5 m crack and, because no replacement blades were available, was repaired. The repair led to an imbalance that was to be corrected by means of field balancing. It took only four balancing runs to balance the wind turbine. The tower’s natural frequency was not excited even when running at the resonance speed. The measurements themselves took about 5 to 10 minutes each.

The service was performed using a mobile VIBXPERT analyzer with a balancing program that has been adapted to the low rotating speeds of wind turbines. The sensor system comprises a speed sensor and a highly sensitive accelerometer that produces measurement results at speeds as low as 0.1 Hz.

"I myself was surprised at the precision with which VIBXPERT calculated the necessary balancing weights for the individual rotor blades," reported Dr. Becker, who coordinated the adaptation of the hardware and software to the balancing conditions on wind turbines and tested it in a field trial.

PRÜFTECHNIK was prompted to initiate this development project because several wind turbines measured during telemonitoring exhibited noticeably strong low frequency vibrations. While aerodynamic imbalance can be reduced by correcting the blade angle, it is now also possible to reduce mass imbalance by means of field balancing using PRÜFTECHNIK measurement equipment.
