REpower North to realise a 150 MW wind power project in China in 2008/2009 - Option for further 150 MW in 2009/2010

Hamburg/Beijing, 12 October 2007. REpower North (China) Co., Ltd., REpower Systems AG’s (WKN 617703) joint venture in China, has today been awarded with a wind farm project of 150 MW in a bidding procedure. The project will be realised at the coastline of China’s Shandong province, 500 kilometres southeast of Beijing. The project is the first commercial project of REpower North and at the same time one of the largest projects ever in the history of REpower Systems Group. The delivery of the first 75 turbines is scheduled from June 2008 to April 2009, absorbing the full production capacity of REpower North in this period. The customer has an option for the delivery of another 75 turbines in 2009/10.

REpower will deliver the renowned 2-megawatt wind turbine MM82 which is certified for the highest wind speeds and therefore can be installed in the extreme wind speeds regions of South China as well as in the high average wind speeds regions of northern China. A Cold Climate Version (CCV) of the MM82, developed by REpower Systems AG for temperatures going down to -40 °C, is scheduled for installation in late 2007 at the northern frontier of China.

The customer consortium comprises of Guohua Energy Investment Co. Ltd., based in Beijing and Australia’s Roaring 40s Renewable Energy Pty Ltd. Guohua is a subsidiary of Shenhua Group, a financial investor active e.g. in real estate and new energy. Since 2003, the company has developed large wind power projects in Inner Mongolia, Hebei and Shandong Province. Roaring 40s is a 50:50 joint venture between Australian-based Hydro Tasmania and Hong Kong listed CLP Group. Roaring 40s is a large-scale renewable energy developer, with projects in Australia, China and India with installation of more than 300 MW to date. The company name “Roaring 40s” derives from the boister-ous winds around the 40° South latitude.

“This contract is a milestone for REpower North. We are looking forward to implementing the project hand in hand with the highly professional team of Guohua and Roaring 40s. REpower North, boasting the leading technology and the support of REpower Systems, is well positioned to become a top supplier in China. With the new NDRC (National Development and Reform Commission) quota regulation demanding 8% of non-hydro renewables in 2020, energy-hungry China will certainly secure a sustainable position among the top three wind power markets in the world”, says Prof. Fritz Vahrenholt, CEO of REpower Systems AG and Chairman of REpower North (China) on the occasion of the signing ceremony in Beijing today.

For this project, REpower has secured important turbine components from local suppliers in China.

REpower North (China) is based in Baotou, the business capital of Inner Mongolia where the lion’s share of China’s wind power installations are expected to take place. Besides the German majority shareholder REpower, the Joint Venture consists of large state-owned North Heavy Industry Corporation and Sino-British Project Developer Honiton Energy. Shareholder Honiton is planning to purchase MM82 CCV turbines from REpower North for projects in Inner Mongolia from the beginning of 2009.
