Berlin/Vienna/Hirschberg (renewablepress) - In light of declining solar capture rates, 8Energies, enspired and Goldbeck Solar have jointly presented a holistic approach to implementing ‘grey’ battery energy storage systems (BESS) at existing and new photovoltaic sites in their white paper. The white paper published on friday provides a scalable blueprint for securing the long-term profitability of PV portfolios through co-location at shared grid connection points.

The industry is under pressure: while the solar capture rate fell from around 80% (2023) to below 58% (2025), the number of hours with negative electricity prices nearly doubled. The cooperation partners are countering this solar cannibalisation by building over the existing grid connection points (GCP). In this case, BESS and PV systems use the same infrastructure but are operated separately.

Economic and technical synergies

Models such as ‘cable pooling’ allow infrastructure costs (CAPEX) to be shared, which can increase the return on equity (IRR) of new PV systems by approximately 29%. For existing systems, IRR increases of up to 24% can be achieved through GCP usage fees or SPV carve-outs.

The focus of the collaboration is on joint optimisation: using AI-based algorithms, PV feed-in is only reduced if the market revenues from storage (i.e. from balancing energy) exceed the opportunity cost of PV curtailment. Analyses show that the loss of revenue for the storage facility due to shared grid usage with intelligent control is only around 4%.

Goldbeck Solar ensures the technical integration for this: a ‘single-primary’ control concept coordinates asset control at the grid connection in compliance with all regulatory requirements such as Section 118 of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG).

This model transforms the grid connection from a static cost factor into a dynamic return lever and accelerates storage expansion in Europe.
