Largest Project with 117 meter rotor in North America to Date

- Nordex N117/2400 Installation On Track to Meet Completion Targets in December 2012

- New Carbon Fiber Blades Produced and Tested with Rigid Quality Control

Hamburg - Since September Nordex has been installing what is currently the largest wind farm with 34 N117/2400 series turbines specially developed for IEC-3 locations at Gratiot County, Michigan, United States. The Beebe Renewable Energy project is growing with the addition of four new multi-megawatt turbines each week. The first N117/2400 was installed on September 27th and there are now 17 N117/2400 fully assembled, despite significant wind at the site. To date 27 blade sets have been delivered to Michigan.

What makes the project so special is that in addition to the commencement of series production of the N117/2400 nacelle at Nordex’ US facility in Jonesboro, Beebe also marks the beginning of series production of the NR58.5 rotor blade, in which carbon fibre is used for the first time. This material is lighter yet more rigid than glass fibre hybrids.

After rigorous fatigue and extreme load testing at Nordex’ testing facility in Rostock, Germany, which demonstrated the durability and long term reliability of this carbon fibre blade, Nordex and the blade manufacturer have been overseeing and monitoring the entire rotor blade production process, making sure that the materials are processed reliably to deliver consistently high quality. Each of the 102 finished blades produced at the facility in Germany, is inspected in detail before being approved for shipping from Germany to the United States. As of today all blades are on their way to Michigan for a timely completion of this first major project utilizing the N117/2400. Further, preparations are under way for the production of the NR58.5 rotor blade in North America in 2013.

The Beebe Renewable Energy project is the first in the United States that Nordex has developed in conjunction with a local partner and sold to its customer Exelon Wind. Once it goes on line, the Beebe project will be supplying more than 25,000 homes with clean electricity.

About Nordex

As one of the technological leaders in multi-megawatt wind power systems, Nordex is benefiting from the trend in favour of large-scale turbines. This experience with multi-megawatt turbines gives Nordex a decisive lead over most of its competitors. Nordex has installed a total of around 4,900 turbines with an aggregate capacity of more than 7,500 MW all around the world. With exports accounting for more than 85 percent of its business, Nordex SE plays a key role in international high-growth regions.
