Challenges for offshore wind energy

- Design and stability of support structures form the basis for efficient electricity generated in the North Sea
- Latest knowledge and field trip to foundations of offshore turbines (with simultaneous interpreting)

Oldenburg/Essen - According to the energy concept of the federal government a development of offshore wind farms up to 25 GW is to take place. The concept aims to ensure electricity production from offshore wind turbines totaling some 15 per cent in Germany. The dimensioning of offshore wind energy converters (OWECs) and the construction of their foundation play a key role in implementing offshore wind farms in water depths of up to 45 meters. This poses new challenges for engineers in designing and setting up support structures.

The two-day technical seminar \"Offshore Wind Energy – Design and Installation of Support Structures in the North Sea\" in Bremerhaven on September 5 and 6 covers both basic and specialized knowledge in the field. The seminar also considers the industry’s further development. Chaired by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Schaumann (ForWind, Leibniz University Hannover, Institute for Steel Construction) experts will inform about the latest knowledge on drafting and calculating the design of offshore wind energy converters’ (OWEC) support structures. Topics will also include the stresses arising from wave loads and fatigue verification using local concepts and design details of joints. Current issues on grouted joints in OWECs will be discussed. Various substructures such as monopiles, jackets, tripods, tripiles and gravity foundations round off the discussion. To provide a practical demonstration, a field trip to several foundation types for offshore use will take up the focus of the seminar.

Some 25 offshore wind farms totaling about 1,700 to 1,800 turbines with a capacity of between approx. 7,800 up to 9,100 megawatts have been approved in the German North Sea (source: German Federal Office for Shipping and Hydrography - BSH). Applications have been filed for an additional 46 wind farms with a total capacity of 14,200 MW. On the second day of the seminar, industry experts will present solutions and concepts required for OWEC manufacturing and installation. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Schaumann will discuss the next innovation steps and future stages in the offshore wind energy industry in Germany.

The \"Offshore Wind Energy – Designing and Implementing Support Structures in the North Sea\" seminar targets manufacturers, project developers, decision makers, wind farm operators, members of certification bodies and approval authorities as well as engineers from various specialist areas of the wind energy industry.

For the first time this year, the event will be simultaneously interpreted in order to satisfy the numerous requests from abroad.

ForWind-Academy and Haus der Technik e.V. are continuing their successful cooperation with this technical seminar.
