juwi Solar Expands PV Business
- EU PVSEC: Project developer presents new large-scale projects and innovations
Hamburg - juwi solar GmbH expands its business with great strides - with innovations in the off-grid area, in technical management and with new large-scale projects. The solar park Lieberose in Brandenburg was extended and with its 71 megawatts (MW) is now the world’s fourth largest solar park. Tutow (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania) and Waldpolenz in Saxony with both 52 MW rank among the world’s top ten solar parks. Waldpolenz got extended by nearly 12 MW, Tutow will follow in fall 2011. juwi Solar develops its business activities in other countries as well. In France, a third large solar farm was inaugurated. In India, a new market for juwi Solar, the first solar power system was connected to the grid; two additional systems will follow in October. From September 5 to 8, juwi Solar presents its services and its product range at the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference (EU PVSEC) in Hamburg.
2011 was a year with a number of beacon projects for juwi Solar. In Phillipsburg in Baden-Württemberg – within eyeshot of a nuclear power plant - juwi constructed the world’s third largest rooftop solar power plant on the roof of Goodyear Dunlop’ s tire stock with 7.4 megawatt. Germany‘s third largest rooftop system on a soccer stadium was realized in Mainz for Mainz 05, a team playing in the German Bundesliga. Another highlight, the solar park Lieberose in Brandenburg, was extended to 71 MW. Germany‘s second largest thin-film solar park now produces 71 millions kilowatt-hours clean solar energy per year, covering the annual requirements of approx. 18,000 households. Waldpolenz in Saxony and Tutow in Mecklenburg-Pomerania produce 52 million kilowatt hours annually, covering the annual requirements of 13,000 households.
\"Solar energy, especially free-field solar energy, has a huge potential to contribute to a fast and consumer-friendly energy transition. In Germany, free-field solar power will be cheaper than power produced in offshore wind farms in less than two years\" says Lars Falck, managing director juwi Solar. \"In addition, solar systems produce energy where it is needed\", he adds.
In France, India and other countries juwi Solar sets examples in international business. With the solar park Sabaranis in Saint Amadou in the Pyrenees, juwi inaugurated its third largest solar park in France. The free-field solar system with 8.5 MW produces annually 11.5 million kWh of clean solar energy. In India, first projects have been constructed - two solar systems (2.48 and 10 MW) in the state of Gujarath and another one with 5.2 MW in Rajasthan. juwi plans to realize projects with a total capacity of more than 100 megawatts in the coming years, the number of employees is expected to rise to more than 100. Bulgaria is another country with excellent conditions for solar energy. juwi opened an office in Sofia and has already constructed two solar parks in Drachevo (3.52MW) and Pripechene (1.024 MW).
juwi sets an example in the area of off-grid as well. In Namibia, juwi Solar GmbH has constructed one of Africa’s largest off-grid power systems. The 200-kW free-field system (1 MW battery storage and 0.5 MW diesel power) in Tsumkwe, Namibia, guarantees an around-the-clock power supply for Tsumkwe’s 700 inhabitants, the local hospital and the police station.
In addition, juwi is one of the world’s leading turn-key project developers. \"As a general contractor, we can offer the construction of turn-key plants to registered holders in practically every country. At present, we look at a number of countries regarding the launch of an own project development and the establishment of further branch offices\", says Lars Falck. juwi is one of the most important companies in the area of operation and maintenance. \"With more than 400 MW of installed capacity and well over 80 employees, we also offer our services for systems that were not constructed by juwi\", adds Falck.
