juwi Wind is Setting an Example with Onshore Projects

- Project developer is increasing wind energy production with repowering and efficient operations management
- entry into new countries

Husum/Woerrstadt - juwi Wind GmbH (Limited Company under German Law) and juwi Management GmbH are expanding their national and international business with great strides. \"We focus on the great and economic potential of onshore wind energy- also in the area of repowering- and enter into new attractive markets\", says Dr. Frank Finzel, Managing Director juwi Wind in the run-up to the Husum Wind Energy 2010, an international trade fair (September 21st to 25th). juwi Management LLC is taking care of technical and commercial operations management and is presenting its whole line-up of services and products on the trade fair in hall 5, booth 5D05. \"Recently we have added service and maintenance and services for rotor systems engineering\", says Rolf Heggen, Managing Director juwi Management GmbH.

For the coming two years juwi Wind has a lot of international projects in the pipeline, with a total output of approx. 1.500 Megawatt (MW). With these about four billion of clean solar energy can be produced each year, covering the needs of 1.000.000 households according to European standards. Central foreign markets are France, the USA, Costa Rica and Poland, but Germany also remains in focus. This year juwi Wind celebrates market entry in Italy, Chile, Uruguay and South Africa. The number of employees of juwi Wind will double from now 170 by 2012. \"There is an increasing demand for our firstclass services and competencies. For this reason, we are looking for highly skilled additions to our staff worldwide\", says Dr. Marie-Luise Pörtner, second Managing Director juwi Wind.

In Poland the project developer has recently started a first project with three 1,5 MW turbines in the windy southwest of the country. The Fuhrländer turbines are located in Stypulow, approximately 100 kilometres east to the German-Polish border, and will go on line this autumn. \"As general contractors we can offer our customers – municipalities, power suppliers and investors - the establishment of turnkey plants. We can showcase projects in France, Costa Rica and the US\", says Dr. Finzel.

In France juwi has meanwhile realized eight wind farms in several regions of the country with approximately 75 MW. More than 20 employees work in the development of wind energy projects in different regions of the country. juwi has recently opened another office in Nantes. \"That way we can guarantee maximum yields and a minimum of operating cost\", says Thomas Albrecht, second Managing Director juwi Managements. From the headquarters in Wörrstadt Albrecht, Heggen and a team of 60 employees take care of the operation management of more than 500 renewable energy plants worldwide - predominantly wind turbines.

A particular highlight is the Guanacaste Wind Farm in Costa Rica which consists of fifty-five 900-kWturbines and was inaugurated at the beginning of 2010. juwi’s second project in Costa Rica, a 15.3 MW wind farm near the country’s capital San José, has already been kicked-off. juwi’s largest wind project is realized in the USA: New US Wind CEO Michael Rucker and his team are supporting the construction off the 60 MW wind farm \"Flat Water\" in Nebraska. Further US-projects are going to be realized mainly from the new US headquarters in Boulder (Colorado).

For the time being Germany remains one of the most important markets for juwi. Here the company has projected 300 plants with a total output of 500 MW. In the past the focus has been the south-west of the country, in the next years juwi will be active nationwide. In addition, the success story continues for another reason. At the place where the juwi CEO Matthias Willenbacher established his first wind turbine 14 years ago, the world’s most powerful onshore wind turbine with an overall height of 200 meters will soon stretch out - an Enercon E 126. The small town Schneebergerhof in Rhineland- Palatinate is once more the location for a landmark project. Five wind turbines and a photovoltaic freefield plant produce more than 36 million kilowatt-hours clean energy per year. The largest lump comes from the new Enercon E 126, which will be finalized in the coming weeks. Powerhouse, hub and rotors with a diameter of 126 meters are going to be mounted at a height of 140 meters. The turbine will supply clean and economic power to more than 5.000 households (with three people) with an output of more than 18 million kWh per year- that is 20 times the annual yield of the E 40 with an output of 0,5 MW. The E 126 is not the first repowering project at the Schneebergerhof. Willenbacher’s pioneer turbine, an Enercon E 40 (0.5 megawatts output), had been replaced by an E 66 (1.8 MW) already in 2003. The E 126 (6 MW) again replaces another E 66 (1.5 MW), which had been established in 1997 as one of the first turbines of this type.

The location at the edge of the Donnersberg is not only an example for technology leaps of wind energy but also for the prospects of repowering. Dr. Pörtner sees \"immense potential in repowering for the increase of energy yields and for the acceptance of wind energy. With a meaningful and elaborate repowering – which means high performance wind turbines at good locations - one can produce more clean energy with fewer plants in the future\". There are more than enough locations suited for wind projects- in almost any region. Central offshore wind farms located far outside in the sea only strengthen the monopoly of energy groups and put burden on consumers with a higher feed in tariff, installation costs and consequential charges for network expansion or other things, say Dr. Pörtner and Dr. Finzel. \"Wind energy in the inland is already competitive to conventionally generated power, and still offers immense potential - also and in particular for the regional creation of value. Each turbine, each solar or bio energy plant that is producing energy on site brings lease and trade tax incomes to the region and boosts the economy. This is only possible with a decentralized concept\", says Dr. Finzel.
