juwi Founders Named Entrepreneurs of the Year - Fred Jung and Matthias Willenbacher receive prestigious entrepreneurial award
Frankfurt/Woerrstadt - Fred Jung and Matthias Willenbacher, founders, owners and co-CEOs of the renewable energy specialist juwi in Wörrstadt, are among Germany’s most successful and dedicated entrepreneurs. On Friday night, at a gala event in Frankfurt, they were named "Entrepreneurs of the Year". With some 300 companies nominated, the "Entrepreneur" is one of the most important and prestigious business awards. After a multi-stage selection process, 77 companies reached the finals to face the judgment of a high-caliber jury of business leaders and academics.
The juwi founders, Fred Jung and Matthias Willenbacher, took top honors in the "Services" category. A total of eight entrepreneurs were honored in Frankfurt with the coveted prize awarded by the auditing and consulting company Ernst & Young. "The winners have distinguished themselves with outstanding business success, solid double-digit growth rates even in difficult times, but also with great social and community dedication. They concentrate very strongly on their core competencies, operate in lucrative niches and are also at the forefront internationally," stated Wolfgang Glauner (Ernst & Young), organizer and project manager of the competition, before hundreds of guests at Frankfurt’s Old Opera House. The prize winners also have a socially responsible side. "They acknowledge their responsibility as employers by supporting employees, educational institutions, associations or environmental projects. These entrepreneurs are well aware that they can only maintain their market position if they have good, well-motivated employees," continued Glauner.
"It is a great honor for us now to join the ranks of the ‘Entrepreneurs of the Year.’ This prize confirms for us that we are on the right road. Companies that, instead of simply chasing a quick buck, have an actual goal before them, take on responsibility and pursue a sustainable, trust- based business policy also make a better showing on the market – particularly in times of crisis. This can also be seen in many other owner-run companies," emphasized Matthias Willenbacher. "Visionary ideas and entrepreneurial success are not mutually exclusive, but rather complement one another. Truly successful businesses keep them both squarely in view. We too have an overarching goal which drives everything we do: 100 percent renewable energy. We are firmly convinced that electricity supply can already be completely changed over to renewable energies today. This makes juwi genuine, believable and gives us and our employees great motivation – each and every day," added Fred Jung.
About the juwi Group:
juwi is one of the world’s leading companies in the field of renewable energies. Since 1996 the project development company has been designing, building, financing and operating plants that harness renewable energies. The juwi Group was founded in 1996 by Matthias Willenbacher (a physicist) and Fred Jung (an agricultural economist). The CEOs together transformed the company from a two-person operation focusing on wind farm project development into an internationally active group with some 700 employees and an annual turnover of more than 600 million euros. In addition to solar, wind and bioenergy, juwi also specializes in water power as well as geothermal energy. Together with a highly motivated team, Willenbacher and Jung, both of whom grew up on farms in the center of Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate, also share a common goal: an energy supply from purely regenerative sources - 100% dedication to 100% renewable energies. The "100% renewables" campaign embodies this goal. For their dedication, juwi has received many awards, including the 2007 German Solar Prize, the 2008 German Climate Protection Prize and the 2009 Clean Tech Media Award 2009. In July 2008, juwi commissioned the construction of the world’s most energy-efficient building in Wörrstadt. By 2011, the company will have grown to more than 1,000 employees worldwide.
About the "Entrepreneur of the Year" competition:
"Entrepreneur of the Year" is a title which only a few businesspeople can claim – all of them from medium-sized companies. Ernst & Young organizes the competition in 50 countries worldwide. The award was presented for the 13th time in Germany in 2009. A neutral jury selects the "Entrepreneur of the Year" in each of five categories. The award identifies and honors superlative entrepreneurial performance. The competition is sponsored by well-known companies and media outlets, including BMW, American Express, DZ Bank, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Manager Magazine. Entrepreneurs who make a decisive contribution to Germany’s innovative strength and competitiveness as a business location are honored with the award. One winner from each of the 50 countries in which the award is presented is also entered in the competition for World Entrepreneur of the Year.
