juwi solar plans boom in international operations

Company has host of projects in the pipeline at the start of the Intersolar

Munich/Wörrstadt - juwi Solar GmbH from Wörrstadt, Rhineland-Palatinate is expanding its international activities in leaps and bounds. While domestic operations are still a central pillar – the juwi group is currently developing the world’s second largest photovoltaic (PV) plant (53 megawatt capacity) at the Lieberose solar park near Cottbus – international operations are growing ever more significant. "Our growth abroad is even stronger that at home - international projects will form a clear majority as early as 2010", commented Lars Falck, CEO of juwi Solar GmbH at the Intersolar trade fair in Munich. Large-scale PV installations are being planned, constructed and operated in Italy, France, Spain, Greece, the Czech Republic, the USA and Canada. Around 50% are projects initiated in-house which juwi then puts up for sale to investors. As Falck explained, "The other 50 percent is made up of installations for which we as main contractor implement turnkey construction for the project’s owners". Worldwide, juwi Solar is on track to implement PV installations with a total capacity of more than 2,500 megawatts by 2012.

In Italy juwi solar has already signed contracts to construct installations with a total capacity of more than 40 megawatts by 2010. Around half these installations are part of projects in South Italy, to be built as free-field installations or on greenhouses that juwi will be implementing in partnership with an Italian company. According to Erwin Mayr, head of the Bozen subsidiary, "Italy has great potential, and has become a key market for us."

The largest PV installation in France is currently being constructed by juwi in Corsica. The Rapale solar park in the north of the island has a capacity of just about eight megawatts and is due to go on-stream in 2009. Meanwhile on the mainland, projects totalling over 100 megawatts are being developed. In Spain the company has teamed up with various partners to plan a whole series of projects that are to be implemented in 2009 and 2010. The market in Greece harbours a great deal of potential and is expected to expand by 300 megawatts a year. Juwi has already realised several installations there, and has compiled a highly promising portfolio of projects. In the Czech Republic juwi has started construction on a new solar power station in Polesovice (central Czech Republic). The 1.6 megawatt project should be completed as soon as this June. Moreover the contract has been signed for a 3 megawatt installation in Bohuòovice (in the south-east of the country). Construction is due to begin on 1st July.

A solar park planned and constructed by juwi is due to go on-stream in the coming months in the USA too, in the form of a free-field PV installation in New Jersey with a capacity of two megawatts. In addition juwi is also planning a further series of projects larger than 10 megawatts in the USA and Canada. Falck concluded, "Our quality and expertise are increasingly in demand worldwide. We are therefore recruiting new personnel not only at our headquarters in the Rhineland-Palatinate, but also for our subsidiaries around the world."

About the juwi group

The juwi group (http://www.juwi.de) was founded in 1996 by Matthias Willenbacher and Fred Jung. The CEOs together transformed the company from a two-person operation focussing on wind farm project development into an internationally active group with around 550 employees and an annual turnover of more than 650 million euros. As well as solar power and bio energy, juwi also specialises in wind and water power, and geothermal energy. So far the solar arm of juwi has realised more than 1000 PV installations with a total capacity of more than 250,000 kilowatts. Willenbacher and Jung also share a common goal: energy supply from purely regenerative sources - 100% dedication to 100% renewable energies. The campaign "100 % renewable" expresses this goal.
