First Wind Turbine with ATS Hybrid Tower Supplies Energy

- Pilot project sets new standards
- Inauguration in Grevenbroich

Grevenbroich - The first wind energy system worldwide with a ATS Hybrid tower is now grid-connected and delivers clean and cheap wind energy. At the Windtest test field at Grevenbroich, the system was today ceremonially started up in the presence of around 100 guests from the fields of economics, politics and society. "This is a great day for wind energy. Now the pilot project can demonstrate the high cost-effectiveness and efficiency of the ATS concept," said Frans Brughuis, Managing Director of the tower construction specialist Advanced Tower Systems (ATS). In Grevenbroich, ATS has installed one of the largest wind energy systems with hybrid tower in the world. The lower section of the innovative tower consists of narrow concrete pre-fabricated parts, the upper section of conventional steel components. With its hub height of 133 meters, the system has an overall height of 180 meters. The tower is constructed and operated by ATS Projekt Grevenbroich GmbH, in which juwi Netzwerk GmbH & Co. KG, Mecal Projects GmbH, Hurks subsidiary HB Bau GmbH and Siemens Project Ventures (SPV) have equal shares.

The ATS tower not only achieves great hub heights and therefore higher energy yields. Equally trend-setting are the tower’s relatively low total costs and the extreme ease of transport. The response within the industry is correspondingly positive. "At international wind trade fairs such as the Ewec in Marseille and the Windpower in Chicago the ATS concept has already aroused great interest from project developers and turbine manufacturers as well as investors," added ATS Sales Manager Johannes Bietz. Until the end of 2010 the ATS tower is scheduled to be used in a series of wind energy projects; more than 20 ATS systems are being planned.

Compared to the widely used hub height of 100 meters, the ATS system achieves energy yields of about 20 per cent more. The higher expenses for the tower construction will be redeemed in approximately four years. Furthermore, the maintenance costs are very low. Bottom line, over the long project time this results in markedly lower energy generation costs, compared to today’s standard systems. This is particularly important for inland locations with lower wind speeds. The components of the hybrid tower are designed to eliminate special transports and to make even inaccessible locations (for example in woods) more accessible.

With annual sales of some EUR 650 million, the juwi group ranks among Germany’s leading renewable energy companies. With a staff of about 550, juwi is involved in the entire service value creation chain in the segments of photovoltaics, wind energy and bioenergy. So far, juwi has realized more than 320 wind turbines with a total capacity of more than 500 MW. In the solar segment, about 1000 PV installations with a total capacity of more than 250,000 kilowatts of capacity were realized.

Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (SPV) is a subsidiary of Siemens Financial Services. Together with renowned partners, SPV invests equity capital in the development of infrastructure projects worldwide, predominantly in the energy, transportation and telecommunications sectors. SPV has already been involved in the development of eleven international power generation projects representing a total capacity of more than 7,000 megawatts, as well as three telecommunications projects, one airport, and a particle therapy center, with a cumulative project volume amounting to USD 7 billion.

Mecal is an independent engineering company specializing in applied mechanics with industrial products in order to achieve a technological advantage for their customers. Mecal has a track record of more than 17 years experience in wind turbine technology. Founded in 1989, Mecal has grown into an organization with 100 employees in the Netherlands, the U.S., and in Japan.

Hurks Groep is one of the largest general contractors in the Netherlands. The company is leading as a builder of high-tech pre-cast concrete constructions, is reputedly innovative, and operates internationally. Hurks is a financially strong partner, with annual sales of Euro 350 million. It is the holding of 15 companies, with a total of 1,000 employees.
