M+W Zander at the Hannover Messe Industry Fair: Battery factories for electric cars as a future segment

Concept for series production of lithium-ion batteries at Stand B 22 in Hall 24

Stuttgart - The international engineering company M+W Zander has entered the market with an innovative Future Factory Concept for manufacturing large size batteries for the electric cars to be operated in "E-mobility" systems. At the Hannover Messe Industry Fair (20 to 24 April 2009), the company presents its proposals for a modular factory for industrial volume production of lithium-ion batteries for the first time. Visitors to the exhibition can obtain more detailed information from Stand B22 at the E-Motive joint stand in Hall 24.

The manufacturing costs for lithium-ion automobile batteries are currently still not economically attractive enough for most potential buyers. Drastic cost reductions can only be achieved by increasing production volumes and the associated reduction in unit costs. The modular factory concepts developed by M+W Zander for volume industrial production are able to make a key contribution here.

The M+W Zander concept combines the objective of substantial cost reductions with maximum safety requirements and production quality as a platform for a high service life of the accumulators. The various production stages for the cells have been incorporated into a modular structure under one roof. The individual production stages consist of preparation of the electrode slurry, anode and cathode coating, assembly and packaging of electrodes and separators, electrolyte filling, the first charging cycle (formation) and the conditioned storage (aging/degassing).

Many years of experience with similar developments in sectors such as Photovoltaics and Semiconductors have been channeled into the Future Factory Concept developed by M+W Zander, where the increase in production has also enabled unit prices to be gradually reduced. M+W Zander also integrates elements such as solvent recovery, multistage air dehumidification, energy efficiency and fire protection.

A brochure with more details on "The modular factory for lithium-ion batteries" is available and can be requested from the press office.
