juwi donates solar installation to Peru hospital

- Off-grid system supplies power for social project

Woerrstadt - The juwi group has taken a first step towards establishing a market for off-grid energy supply by setting up a solar island system in Peru. Located in the Peruvian Andes, the photovoltaic installation has a capacity of 5.7 KW and will provide solar power for a hospital, wholly independently of the country’s mains supply. Fabian Jochem, who is creating a new business area for off-grid power supply at juwi, explained the value of the project "These kind of off-grid system using renewable energies are becoming increasingly significant in view of globally increasing energy consumption and the rise in oil prices. They make cost-effective, clean and reliable energy supply accessible even in emerging nations and developing countries where many regions are still not connected to a mains network." This hospital project also represents juwi's first ground-mounted PV installation in South America. Further solar projects both on- and off-grid are scheduled to follow on the continent.

juwi is branching into off-grid systems with the ultimate aim of realising regenerative energy supply in as many regions of the world as possible. The Wörrstadt-based company, a developer of wind, solar and bio energy projects, has donated the off-grid system to the hospital, a modern mission hospital serving Peru’s highland Indians who previously had limited access to medical treatment. The hospital is financed by Diospi Suyana, an organisation with exclusively charitable and religious aims. The expression "Diospi Suyana" is a Quechua phrase meaning 'we trust in god'. The organisation and the hospital were set up by husband-and-wife team Dr. Martina John and Dr. Klaus-Dieter John. juwi director Fred Jung commented, "We are keen to support Diospi Suyana and as well as generating clean energy to contribute to the success of the project." A modern PV back-up system was selected for the Peruvian project: electricity is generated by means of photovoltaic modules and feeds directly into the consumers. Excess capacity is stored in a battery. The system can automatically hook up to mains supply should bottlenecks occur (for instance when there are peaks in demand or in bad weather).

Jochem however stresses that "This kind of emergency situation is highly unlikely". Over the course of a day, the 24 batteries that are fed by the solar modules can store 30 kilowatt-hours. Overnight this energy is used to operate a large part of the hospital's security and outside lighting systems. This off-grid power supply project means savings for the hospital of around 700 kilowatt-hours a month. The system is modular in construction and has scope for the installation to be expanded and to be converted to mains feed.

About Diospi Suyana

The Diospi Suyana hospital (http://www. diospi-suyana.de) is situated in the Andean town of Curahuasi, at an altitude of 2600m above sea level in the south of Peru. It is excellently strategically positioned, very close to the main Cusco-Abancay-Lima transit route. 750,000 people, mainly indigenous Quechua, live within a three-hour radius of the hospital, in a region that was the ancient centre of the vanished Inca civilisation. Diospi Suyana aims to offer a comprehensive spectrum of medical services to Quechua people in southern Peru, and its clinic is equipped with 50 beds, four operating rooms, an intensive care unit, a lab and an x-ray unit. The hospital provides jobs for around 70 Peruvians. Employees from other countries are financed via international support groups. Construction began on 24th May 2005, and more than 4500 people took part in the official opening on 31st August 2007.

About the juwi group

The juwi group (http://www.juwi.de) was founded in 1996 by Matthias Willenbacher and Fred Jung. The CEOs together transformed the company from a two-person operation focussing on wind farm project development into an internationally active group with around 500 employees and an annual turnover of more than 400 million euros. As well as solar power and bioenergy, juwi also specialises in wind and water power, and geothermal energy. To date, juwi has installed more than 300 wind turbines producing a total output of over 450 MW, while in the solar sector, juwi has set up around 800 PV systems with a total capacity of more than 220,000 KW as of December 2008. Willenbacher and Jung also share a common goal: energy supply from purely regenerative sources - 100% dedication to 100% renewable energies. The "100 % renewable" campaign embodies this goal.
