Phoenix Solar AG wins the Intersolar AWARD 2008

- Innovation prize for the Phoenix Power Bridge® mounting system
- Bridge between technology and aesthetics

Sulzemoos/Munich - On 12 June 2008, Phoenix Solar AG won the Intersolar AWARD 2008 at the world’s largest solar technology trade fair, the Intersolar in Munich. The Intersolar AWARD, conferred for the first time ever, is intended to make the innovative power of photovoltaics and the solar thermal branch more visible and, as a platform for innovation, to raise public awareness. All in all, there were three winners in the photovoltaics category and one from solar thermal sector. The judges’ criteria which define a high level of technical innovation, technological advantage and, last but not least, enhancing financial viability were all met by the Phoenix Power Bridge® mounting system.

Jörg Fernsler, product manager at Phoenix Solar AG, received the award for the Phoenix Power Bridge®. Architecture planted the seed for the innovative on-roof mounting system: The core idea, which is to distribute strength across the roof, thereby ensuring that the weight is effectively taken off the roof rafters, came from bridge building. Providing the customary statics is no longer necessary, and the stability of the mounting system, along with maintaining the roof statics, are guaranteed at all times. Thanks to the Phoenix Power Bridge® roofs which up until now were unsuitable for PV systems due to static reasons, can now be equipped with photovoltaic systems.

The advantages of the system from a financial standpoint also convinced the jury: thanks to the large distances between the supports the installer only needs a third of the roof hooks normally needed and can thus save up to 40 percent in installation time. Another plus point in favour of the Phoenix Power Bridge® was the aesthetics involved – to date, an unusual aspect for a mounting system: curved rails give the system its sophisticated design. The overall look is smooth and seamless, without spaces between the modules.

"We are delighted that we were able to give proof of our innovative strength through the Intersolar AWARD. It is our aspiration to lower costs of PV systems through ongoing innovation, thereby coming closer to grid parity. Particularly against the background of the steadily rising cost of materials, inventions such as the Phoenix Power Bridge®, which hold the promise of clear savings on materials as compared with conventional solutions, take on a special significance", stated Manfred Bächler, Chief Technology Officer of Phoenix Solar AG.

The Intersolar AWARD

This year was the first year that the organizers of Intersolar, Solar Promotion GmbH and Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe GmbH & Co. KG, in cooperation the Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW), invited companies to compete for the Intersolar AWARD. The jury was made up of experts from the solar sector and well-known journalists of the trade press: Dr. Volker Buddensiek, Chief Editor of the journal "Sonne, Wind und Wärme", Dr. Harald Drück, Head of the Research and Testing Centre for solar plants at the University of Stuttgart, Dr. Stefan Glunz, Head of the Silicon Solar Cell of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems and Karsten Schäfer, Chief Editor of the journal "Photovoltaik".
