Press Release
Herausgeber: REpower Systems AG
Hamburg, 2nd February 2006. Exactly one year ago today, in the presence of 600 invited guests, the former Federal Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin, REpower CEO Prof. Fritz Vahrenholt and REpower COO Matthias Schubert (among others) pressed the symbolic starting button to mark the beginning of automatic operation of the REpower 5M in Brunsbüttel. With an average availability of 95.1 percent, the prototype’s first year of operation (tower height: 120 metres to the hub, rotor diameter 126 metres, rated power: 5,000 kilowatts) can be valued as a success.
Despite extensive surveying work, inspections and numerous visitors from commerce, politics and science (together with safety-related shutdowns) the prototype has so far supplied around 13 million kilowatt hours to the public grid. Measured and certified performance values since operation have exceeded those calculated by the company during the development phase. Matthias Schubert: “We are absolutely delighted with the operational performance and the results of our surveys, which show that the prototype has met our expectations”.
The following steps are planned for this year: Two further 5Ms are due to be constructed for customers E.ON/Essent and the Lower Saxony energy supplier EWE at the DEWI OCC test site in Cuxhaven, where it will be possible to test offshore deployment under favourable wind conditions and obtain comparative data.
In summer, the 5M is likely going offshore: Two turbines will likely be assembled at a depth of 44 metres, 25 kilometres from the Scottish coast, in the Moray Firth. For REpower, this demonstrator project marks an important milestone in the development of the offshore market and the future competitiveness of wind energy in general.
