REpower 5M gains approval for test location in Cuxhaven

Hamburg, 3 November 2005. The wind energy company REpower Systems AG has acquired a location for the operation of its REpower 5M type wind energy turbine in the DEWI-OCC test field in Cuxhaven. After signing the location agreement at the end of last year, REpower has now attained the corresponding construction approval for the turbine, which has a rated output of five megawatts. The 5M is due to be installed on a North Sea bank in October 2006 and will enter operation in November. Alongside Brunsbüttel/Schleswig-Holstein, the company now has a further land-based location that it can use to test the future offshore deployment of its most powerful wind turbine under ideal wind conditions. The investor and operator is the energy company EWE AG, which is located in Oldenburg/Niedersachsen. The required approval for operation has just been granted by DEWI-OCC (Offshore and Certification) GmbH.

“As the future of wind energy will predominantly be played out in powerful wind parks located at sea, it is important that the operational behaviour of the multimegawatt plants are first rigorously tested under realistic conditions on land,” explained Matthias Schubert, COO at REpower. “The extremely positive results from our 5M prototype at Brunsbüttel make us optimistic that we have developed the right turbine for offshore deployment and also provide us with a great deal of certainty – as each new test turbine we gain provides us with valuable insights, even in respect of the comparative data, which are indispensable for offshore planning.”

The 5M turbine, the rotors of which have a diameter of 126 metres, will be constructed in Cuxhaven and will have a hub height of 117 metres.
