Blitzstrom promotes advanced solar off-grid energy technology

Mainbernheim, Sept. 23 - Blitzstrom GmbH is very pleased to announce a novel energy technology based on thin film photovoltaic modules in combination with an advanced electrochemical energy storage system supplied by EN-o-DE Energy on Demand Production and Sales GmbH. The strength of the partnership lies in the increased overall system efficiency.

The realisation of off- grid power supply is heavily dependent on the availability of affordable solar energy modules and a robust, highly efficient, long living and low-cost electrical energy storage medium. These requirements are likely to be fulfilled by the combination of thin film photovoltaic technology and an energy storage system developed beyond the conventional battery systems.
This combination of technologies opens up competitive opportunities for integrated systems applications such as
· Novel off grid power supply stations
· Replacement of diesel generation sets and
· Up-scaling of existing off grid power supply stations, when larger energies are needed

EN-o-DE storage technology is based on the concept of the Vanadium Redox energy storage system originally invented in Australia and further developed the technology for “Vanadium Instant Energy - VANIE” to meet the requirements of rural electrification.

In the VANIE System the energy is stored in two liquid electrolytes, containing vanadium ions in different oxidation states. For charging and discharging the liquids are pumped through an electrochemical fuel cell. Other than in conventional batteries (lead acid, nickel cadmium, etc.) both the power and the energy can be independently specified.

The smallest modular unit is 1kW power and 20kWh energy. The desired energy is achieved by the amount of electrolyte in the tanks. The system shows several advantages over conventional batteries as instant information of state of charge, instantaneous availability of power, allowed to deep discharges, low self discharge, ease of use, longevity of electrolyte and major systems components.

The goal is to achieve 25 years of lifetime in off-grid solutions with some predefined maintenance. The conventional lead-acid batteries must be replaced practically for every 3 to 5 years due to its inherent limitations of the technology.

For a proper cost comparison of energy storage systems the cumulative kWh that is consumed over the period of lifetime has to be calculated. The use of the new energy storage system in the most applications is cheaper than regular batteries like lead-acid and makes the new technology based storage system more economical.

Moreover, at this stage the VANIE System in conjunction with the first time use of a thin film photovoltaic system is able to provide energy to a competitive price in comparison to common diesel power generation sets. The expected markets are the energy supply in rural areas in the Pacific-Asian region and small islands.

BLITZSTROM GmbH newly established the joint venture – AGIRE, together with EN-o-DE Energy on Demand Production and Sales GmbH, and TITAN ENERGY Systems Ltd.,. AGIRE is the acronym – Austrian German Indian Renewable Energy Joint Venture with the meaning “to act” and derives from old Latin language. The mission of the AGIRE Joint Venture is to provide a cost efficient solution to energy supply in rural areas in India and will be manufactured at Hyderabad, India and sold under the name “BE-TITAN” .
