Mold control beneficial for the protection of power plants and service teams

- Anti-mold coating prevents microbial infestation

Ansbach (renewablepress) - Mold is annoying and dangerous not only in living spaces, it also can become a problem for wind turbines operators and their service personnel. Especially wind turbines in offshore areas often suffer from severe infestation. At German coasts, by the end of 2016 already 947 offshore wind turbines were operated, which have to withstand wind and weather influences.

Mold can become a health burden for anyone who comes in contact with contaminated surfaces. Maintenance, repairs or inspections can only be performed when wearing protective clothing and respiratory protection.

Tikkurila GmbH, based in Ansbach, Germany, which has its business focus on wood protection, coatings, paints, lacquers and functional coatings, is aware of this problem. "In discussions and when visiting facilities, we have found out, that many existing plants are contaminated and action is urgently required", says Uwe Volk, responsible for Technical Sales at Tikkurila GmbH.

No condensation no mold
Ashore, 27.270 wind power plants produce green electricity. These facilities are exposed to extreme weather conditions during their entire lifespan of up to 20 years. For manufacturers, operators and technical operators, it is crucial that the power plants reliably produce electricity and there are no health burdens for service operations teams.

Tikkurila focuses exactly on these requirements with the coating system Tikkurila BioRid: the system prevents a microbial re-infestation after elimination of mold infestation and cleaning the affected areas. A micro-porous coating with insulating and absorbing properties is applied, which allows a fast and effective absorption and evaporation of condensed water using a predominantly physical operating principle. "The coating removes an important livelihood for the growth and survival of microorganisms: water, which condensates on surfaces", explains Volk. The system’s mode of operation: "Coated surfaces stay dry and therefore free of microbial contamination", says Volk.

Another product, Tikkurila GrafoTherm, acts similar, but with the main target to reduce water condensation in wind turbines. The coating is suitable for all insulated and non-insulated surfaces. It also acts as a thermal insulation for pipes, tanks, ceilings and walls made of steel, aluminum, concrete and wood.

First practical applications in the wind sector are promising
Using the two functional coatings, Tikkurila GrafoTherm and Tikkurila BioRid, damage in wind turbines, which are caused by condensation or mold, can be significantly reduced, which means the lifespan of material and the safety for maintenance personnel can be increased. The coatings have already been used successfully for over 12 years in the food industries, a very sensitive sector.
