BELECTRIC: Punitive Tariffs Unnecessarily Raise Price of Photovoltaics

- Thin-Film Modules are a Secure Alternative for Cost-Efficient Solar Power

Munich/Kolitzheim - The punitive tariffs on crystalline photovoltaic modules from China announced by the European Commission on June 4, 2013 are the wrong way to reduce the cost of solar power. One of the most important goals of the energy turnaround is the cost-effective expansion of renewable energies. Import tariffs increase the price of solar power at the expense of power consumers. This is the wrong signal to the European solar industry. Ground-mounted solar power plants constructed in Europe today are realized using up to 80 percent regional value creation, even when all photovoltaic modules are imported. As a result, the argument of tariff advocates, that the punitive tariffs secure jobs in Europe, is not valid. Exactly the opposite is the case: The imposition of punitive tariffs automatically raises the module prices, which in turn leads to a rise in cost for photovoltaic systems. This jeopardizes their ability to compete and, with it, jobs in the fields of development, installation and in component and plant construction.

As an immediate measure for the cost-effective expansion of solar energy in Europe, BELECTRIC has secured a special quota of thin-film modules that are not affected by the punitive tariffs from the global market leader, First Solar.
