Strong Partners for the Energy Transition: Austrian VERBUND AG and juwi Group Cooperate in Wind Energy Projects

- Austrian electricity provider already generates 90 percent of its power from renewable sources
- Wind farm portfolio includes 21 turbines with a total capacity of 86 megawatt.

Wörrstadt/Vienna - Joint-ventures are a key to success, also in the energy transition. Therefore, German project developer juwi is pleased to announce to have found a strong and reliable partner for major wind farms in Rhineland-Palatinate. juwi will operate its wind farms in Ellern, Seibersbach, Dörrebach and Dichtelbach (in the Hunsrück) and in Stetten together with VERBUND AG. \"Together, we make a great team,\" says juwi CEO Matthias Willenbacher. \"The Austrian electricity supplier is fully committed to renewable energy and already generates 90 percent of its electricity from renewable sources.\"

The wind farm portfolio has a total capacity of 86.1 MW and will produce more than 255 million kilowatt power. The commissioning will take place gradually from the end of 2012 to mid-2013. The portfolio hours of electricity in a single year - enough to supply around 70,000 households with clean wind consists of 21 wind turbines, including five Enercon E-126. The E-126 is the most powerful turbine that is currently available on the international wind energy market. With a capacity of 7.5 MW, a single plant of this type can supply around 5,000 households with clean wind power.

VERBUND has been operating successfully on the German electricity market for many years. Since 2009, the company has owned more than 13 hydropower plants on Bavaria’s river Inn and has shares in several border power plants. These power plants enable VERBUND to supply some 1.6 million households with clean hydropower. Wind power is the perfect supplement to hydropower and, as such, forms an important cornerstone in VERBUND’s company strategy.\"The purchase of this wind farm portfolio is a strategic move for VERBUND,\" explains VERBUND CEO Wolfgang Anzengruber. \"Germany is one of our key target markets for the future. We are delighted to be present in this ground-breaking wind market together with juwi, one of the most experienced and successful project developers in Germany,\" Anzengruber adds.

When the first nacelle will be mounted on the 135 meter high concrete tower of the Enercon E-126 in Ellern in the coming weeks, it will be emblazoned with the juwi logo on one side and the VERBUND lettering on the other. By the way, the gondola’s form is based on a design by British star architect Sir Norman Foster.
