Schleswig-Holstein to be important offshore base

- windcomm cluster management calls for clear position on ports

Husum - In its new energy plan, the German government is to massively encourage the expansion of offshore wind power as of September 2010. The first ten offshore wind farms are to be implemented quickly, because little has happened to date. Over five billion euros are to be provided in a federal government immediate action fund for the development of offshore wind farms.

This raises significant questions for Schleswig-Holstein: What does the programme mean for offshore wind energy in the region? How will the people, the businesses and the regional port locations be able to profit from this, and what conditions have to be created for companies here in the state, and especially with regard to the qualification of employees?

These questions will be discussed at a two-day international event on 8 and 9 November in Husum, which will be dealing with the special challenges posed by moving out to sea. \"In Schleswig-Holstein we have extensive experience and knowledge in the maritime sector and in wind farming on land. windcomm project director Matthias Volmari is certain that when it comes to offshore wind power, the Schleswig-Holstein enterprises will not be able to provide all of the services required. \"Here we also have areas of creating added value where we need foreign know-how. One example is the installation of offshore turbines\", said Volmari. This is why the second day at Husum’s Nordsee Congress Centrum is dedicated to an intensive exchange of experiences, aimed at establishing international cooperation projects.

Logistics and service concepts will also be a topic at the Offshore B2B Meetings and Conference (OBMC) 2010. The new congress centre at the exhibition grounds will be the venue for talks by specialists from throughout northern Europe on safe foundations, fast transport vessels, fire protection concepts, training and retraining programmes. Companies from the region will also be showcasing their product and service innovations for the offshore sector.

\"Besides providing suitable ports for handling the installation and servicing the offshore wind farms another problem is the availability of skilled employees\", explained Dr. Matthias Hüppauff, managing director of the North Frisia Business Development Corporation and the body responsible for windcomm. Hüppauff is convinced that \"Schleswig-Holstein must quickly position itself here, and take a leading position if it doesn’t want to miss the inter-national boat. Training content has to be standardised on an international level so that service technicians from our region can also service turbines in Denmark and the UK. Otherwise we shall miss the great chance for our development as a business base\".

The network agency windcomm schleswig-holstein is the cluster management agency for Schleswig-Holstein’s wind industry. It was established in 2006 and is responsible for cor-porate and business base development for the regional wind industry. windcomm is a pro-ject run by the North Frisia Business Development Corporation, and funded by the Schleswig-Holstein government’s Future Programme.
