One of the world
- juwi group wraps up 40 MW photovoltaic-project Waldpolenz
Brandis/Köthen - The juwi group, based in Wörrstadt, western Germany, completed grid connection of its biggest solar power project by the end of 2008. The final solar modules of the Waldpolenz energy park in Brandis, near Leipzig in eastern Germany, have been assembled in December 2008. With production capacity of 40 megawatts the solar power plant is the fourth largest photovoltaic array in the world. "We’ve completed a one-of-a-kind project in which grid connection happened even faster than we anticipated," comments juwi branch director, Ingo Rödner. At a former military airbase in Brandis and Bennewitz in the state of Saxony, renewable energy company juwi has installed a PV solar power station that generates some 40 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually while displacing about 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). The Waldpolenz station produces enough electricity to power more than 10,000 homes annually.
The solar park has a surface area of more than 100 hectares, about the equivalent of nearly 200 soccer fields. Altogether the juwi solar GmbH specialists installed more than half a million state-of-the-art, thin-film modules supplied by First Solar. As general contractor juwi directed the planning, logistics and construction site management.
The juwi group recently connected other major projects in and outside Germany, such as in Köthen (14.8 megawatts rated capacity), Wörrstadt (5.6 megawatts) and Veitriedhausen (2.9 megawatts) in Germany along with arrays in southern Italy (3.2 megawatts) and the Czech Republic (1.6 megawatts). "Free-standing solar power stations are extremely important, not only for climate protection, but also to advance solar energy as a whole. They help drive down the cost of solar energy and make it more competitive," says juwi co-CEO Matthias Willenbacher.
