\"Community Power - Citizens\' Power\"

Bonn - Although German energy transition (so called Energiewende) has not gained much momentum so far, one fact cannot be denied: In the last ten years the number of energy cooperatives multiplied tenfold in Germany - mostly notably in the Federal States of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony. To this conclusion comes a study launched by the Federal Environment Ministry.

Citizens are actively involved in renewable energy projects in their regions and thus they contribute to decentralized energy supply in the future. But the planning and implementation of projects like wind farms requires first and foremost acceptance amongst the local community. The participation of community members in decentralized ownership models can help to increase acceptance for renewable projects. Communities are important drivers in the development of renewable energies. They can benefit at the same time since previously imported energy feedstocks or final energy will be replaced by local energy sources, technologies and services. Simultaneously, a series of value added steps take place within the community itself, which have a positive impact on local economic effects.

The Institut für Ökologische Wirtschaftsforschung (IÖW) analyzed for the year 2009 that 213 million euros were collected by the revenues of trade tax and the municipal share of income tax generated by wind energy farms. Renewables’ added value in total amounted to 6.7 billion euros. The German Renewable Energy Association (BEE) forecasts for 2020 that trade tax generated by wind energy will increase up to 316 million euros and added value in total even to 13 billion euros.

World Wind Energy Conference (WWEC2012) will feature the special topic of \"Community Power – Citizens\' Power\", referring to the development and ownership of renewable energy projects by local citizens and communities. WWEC2012 will take place from 3 until 5 July in Bonn, Germany. The conference is organized by World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) and German Wind Energy Association (BWE) and will be supported by numerous renewable organizations from all over the globe.

The WWEC2012 will discuss all aspects of wind power utilization in 40 sessions with 200 speakers. In accordance with the main topic of the WWEC2012 \"Community Power - Citizens\' Power\", the main focus will be on decentralized ownership models.
